THE TELESCOPE IS A 1.22 METER (48") NEWTONIAN F /4.5 TELESCOPE ON TRI-AXIAL MOUNT
THE TELESCOPE MIRROR WAS RE-ALUMINIZED IN 1995

THE TELESCOPE WAS ORIGINALLY USED AT THE CLOUDCROFT OBSERVATORY IN NEW MEXICO BY THE USAF FROM 1964 UNTIL THE MID 1980'S AT WHICH TIME OWNERSHIP TRANSFERRED TO NASA/JPL AT TABLE MOUNTAIN IN WRIGHTWOOD CA. IT WAS USED THERE UNTIL LATE 2003 AND REMAINED IN PLACE UNTIL LATE 2011 WHEN IT WAS CAREFULLY PACKED AND STORED BY NASA/JPL TECHNICIANS FOR TRANSFER TO A NEW LOCATION.
CLOUDCROFT WAS BUILT BY THE U.S. AIRFORCE IN 1964 FOR AN INITIAL COST OF OVER $6,000,000 DOLLARS WITH ITS PRINCIPAL INSTRUMENT BEING THIS 48" NEWTONIAN REFLECTOR TELESCOPE
This 122 Cm (48 ") f/4.5 Newtonian Reflector Telescope with it's 38 Cm finder scope was used in making systematic measurements of Saturn's Satellite Moon Titan ,Neptune and Jupiter's Galilean satellites as well as selected asteroids and was used in Monitoring the brightness changes of various stars (Youthful T Tauri stars and Red Dwarf Flare stars . Etc.)
A single computer can control the telescope , dome , windscreen , and data acquisition
telescope operations. The Telescope was originally equipped with a high-speed pulse-counting photometer, capable of integration times as short as 0.01 seconds (the detector was a FW 130 photo multiplier inside a cooled chamber ) it was mounted at the Newtonian focus along with a TV acquisition camera
The Telescope and Finder Scope fields of view were displayed on a remote console
This telescope could be pre-programmed to go from 1 Heavenly Body to the next at the flick of a switch
the telescope slews at a rate of 1.5 degrees / second to an accuracy of 5 sec of arc in declination and 10 seconds of arc in the right ascension / can move from horizon to horizon in 90 sec
IN ITS MOST RECENT LOCATION THE TELESCOPE HAS BEEN UPGRADED CONSIDERABLY BY NASA/JPL TO KEEP IT STATE OF THE ART
